Luca Paolini (KAT) a devenit al doilea italian, în tot atâtea zile, care poartă tricoul roz, după ce a câștigat etapa a treia din Giro d’Italia 2013.
Pe locurile doi și trei, după iItalianul, în vârstă de 36 de ani, au venit Cadel Evans (BMC) și Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Sharp), la 16 secunde diferență.
Bradley Wiggins (Sky Procycling) a sosit în grupul fruntaș, dar Salvatore Puccio nu a fost acolo și a pierdut tricoul roz, care i-a revenit lui Paolini, care a beneficiat și de un bonus de 20 de secunde. Evans a luat un bonus de 12 secunde, iar Hesjedal unul de opt secunde.
Etapa a treia a dus rutierii pe un traseu pitoresc, în lungime de 222 km, de la Sorrento la Marina di Ascea, de-a lungul coastei Amalfi. Un grup format din șapte rutieri, Dirk Bellemakers (Lotto-Belisol), Fabio Taborre (Vini-Fantini), Manuele Boaro (Saxo-Tinkoff), Willem Wauters (Vacansoleil-DCM), Jarlinson Pantano (Colombia), Bert De Backer (Argos-Shimano) și Jackson Rodriguez (Androni – Venezuela) a evadat de pluton, aproape imediat după start, obținând un avans de aproape șapte minute.
Totuși, avansul grupului evadator a scăzut după urcarea de la San Mauro Cilento, kilometrul 153, iar distanța față de pluton a început să scadă simțitor pe măsură ce echipa Sky Procycling a început să forțeze.
Grupul celor șapte s-a spart, după ce De Backer a fost lăsat în urmă. Mai apoi, Taborre s-a lansat în încercarea de a evada, obținând pe coborâre un avans de peste un minut, pe care n-a reușit să și-l păstreze.
